Set up
- Mark 25 and 50 yards from the hole.
- Every ball from somewhere between the two, no two alike.
- Play the ball as it lies, same ball throughout.
- Record each first shot's leave: short, pin-high or past.
How to play
- Hole every ball out; the score is shots to finish.
- Record the result and the leave before the next.
- Do not retake a shot.

Details
- Move between shots: a different distance, lie and angle each time.
If you are using a launch monitor or radar
- A monitor cannot score this game and it cannot be run indoors. The score is shots to hole out, and no monitor can see that.
- Its use is before the test: knowing your carry with each wedge from 25 to 50 yards.
Retesting
- Warm up first — ten to fifteen balls with the club you will use. Same set-up, same ball, same conditions every retest. One run is a snapshot; two or three averaged is a standard.
Benchmark
- The benchmark is up-and-down from 25 to 50 yards, confirmed in the reference data. It is the universal weak band: scratch gets up and down about a third of the time, a 25 handicap fewer than one in ten. A low score here is normal. The score includes the putt, so it is read alongside the putting cards — the leave tally shows how much of it was the pitch.
Equipment
- Wedges · 20 balls · two marks at 25 and 50 yards · rangefinder or a consistent pace. No specialist technology is required.
