Set up

  • Pick the level: Easier 9-iron, Mid 7-iron (the core test), Advanced 5-iron.
  • Enter your normal full distance with that club.
  • Mark that distance from the hole. Every ball from the mark.
  • Twenty balls, that club only, normal routine.

How to play

  • Hit twenty from the mark.
  • Measure each ball from the hole and enter it as you go.
  • Changing level, mode or distance starts a new round.

measuring · launch monitor · range mat · retesting · benchmark

Measuring

  • Score every ball, including the bad ones, where it stops — not where it lands. A rangefinder is easiest; a consistent pace will do.
  • The rings are a fixed distance from the hole: 8%, 16% and 28% of your shot.

If you are using a launch monitor or radar

  • Use it to find the club's distance: ten full swings, carry, averaged. Use carry, not total.
  • It cannot score Measured mode — proximity is measured from the hole once the ball has stopped.
  • Indoors, or with no resting place you can see, use Range-mat with the carry numbers.

If you are on a range mat with no way to measure

  • Choose Range-mat on the card. It gives two marker distances, 8% short and 8% long of your number — from 150 yards, 138 and 162.
  • Between the markers scores; short or long does not. Judge left and right by eye.
  • It keeps your history but gives no benchmark gap or strokes gained: those need feet from the hole.

Retesting

  • Same level, same distance, same ball and same club every retest. Mid (7-iron) is the core assessment; Easier and Advanced are for development.
  • One run is a snapshot; two or three averaged is a standard.

Benchmark

  • The benchmark is how close golfers of your handicap finish with the same club, as a share of that club’s distance (Shot Scope data: approach proximity by club against performance-average club distance).
  • 7-iron: 12.7% at scratch, 17.3% at 5, 20.9% at 10, 31.8% at 15, 37.9% at 20, 40.4% at 25. The 9-iron and 5-iron levels use their own club rows.
  • As a share, it scales to your own distance, so it works whatever you hit the club.
  • Strokes gained is against the tour baseline and estimated from the ring each ball finished in.

Equipment

  • One iron · 20 balls · a mark at your distance · rangefinder or a consistent pace, or two markers on the range. No specialist technology is required.

Scoring

  • 5 Ball finishes inside 8% of the distance.
  • 3 Between 8% and 16%.
  • 1 Between 16% and 28%.
  • 0 More than 28% away.

Benchmark gap

Your gap to the reference data for your handicap shows once all twenty are entered. How it is worked out is in Full notes.
